St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church. Known for his radical poverty, love for Christ, and devotion to the Gospel, his life is a powerful story of conversion and complete trust in God.
The Early Life of St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis, born Francesco Bernardone in 1182 in Assisi, Italy, was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant and his wife. As an only child, Francis lacked nothing. He enjoyed parties, fine clothes, and a carefree lifestyle.
One of his greatest dreams was to become a knight. He was drawn to the excitement, armor, and glory that came with it. However, after going to war, being imprisoned, and suffering from illness, Francis began to question the life he had been living.
The Conversion of St. Francis
Francis began spending more time in prayer and gradually felt God calling him to something very different.
One day, he encountered a man suffering from leprosy. In the past, Francis would have avoided him, but this time he approached the man, embraced him, and kissed his hand.
Rather than feeling disgust, Francis was filled with joy. He began to understand that God was changing his heart and teaching him to see Christ in the poor and suffering.
Not long afterward, Francis entered the rundown church of San Damiano. While praying there, he heard Jesus tell him, “Francis, repair My church.”
Francis first believed God meant the physical church building. Wanting to begin the work immediately, he took cloth from his father's business, sold it, and used the money for the restoration.
His father was furious.
St. Francis Gives Up His Wealth
Francis' father brought him before the bishop and demanded that he return the money. He also disinherited his son.
This became a defining moment in the life of St. Francis.
Francis realized that he could no longer depend on his family's wealth to accomplish God's work. He gave back his possessions and even the clothes he was wearing, choosing instead to live as a poor man who depended completely on God.
From that point on, Francis embraced a life of poverty, prayer, service, and obedience to Christ.
The Beginning of the Franciscan Order
Francis began rebuilding the church of San Damiano, but before long, others were inspired by his example and joined him, and together they repaired other churches in the area.
What began as the work of one man soon became a growing community dedicated to poverty, preaching, and living the Gospel.
This community eventually became the Franciscan Order.
Francis and his followers sought to imitate Jesus as simply and faithfully as possible. They preached repentance, cared for the poor, and encouraged others to turn their hearts toward God.
St. Francis Meets the Sultan
In 1219, during the Crusades, Francis traveled to Egypt.
Rather than carrying a weapon, he crossed enemy lines and met with Sultan al-Kamil. Francis hoped to speak with him about Jesus and the Christian faith.
We do not know everything that was said during their meeting, but the Sultan received Francis peacefully, listened to him, and allowed him to return safely to the Christian camp.
The meeting remains one of the most remarkable events in the life of St. Francis of Assisi and reflects his courage, faith, and desire to share the Gospel.
The Legacy of St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis founded the Franciscan family of religious orders, and his example has inspired Christians for more than 800 years.
The First Order was founded for Francis and the men who joined him in a life of poverty and preaching. Today it includes several communities of Franciscan friars who continue to serve the Church through prayer, ministry, and care for those in need.
The Second Order, known as the Poor Clares, began through St. Clare of Assisi, who was inspired by Francis' way of life. These religious women embraced poverty and dedicated themselves to prayer and life in community.
The Third Order was established for those who wanted to live according to Franciscan spirituality without entering a monastery or religious community. Today, members of the Secular Franciscan Order live ordinary family and professional lives while seeking to follow Christ through prayer, simplicity, service, and care for others.
Together, these three branches helped spread the Franciscan way of life throughout the Church and around the world. His life reminds us that holiness does not depend on wealth, comfort, or status. Francis discovered true joy when he gave up the things he had once valued most and placed his trust completely in God.
St. Francis of Assisi was 45 years old when he died in 1226. His feast day is celebrated each year on October 4.
He is widely known as the patron saint of animals and ecology, and his life continues to inspire Catholics to care for creation, serve the poor, and follow Christ with humility and courage.
